Here at Monday Happiness we’re a little obsessed with work. We get all giddy over Mondays and a new start to a work week. That being said, we have no qualms with some ‘me-time’ or vacations.
On this series called ‘My Vacation stories’ we ask you what you get up to when you are not grinding and hustling.
We'll run this series throughout December. Of course we start with the champion of doing nothing: Thembeka
Where are you usually on holidays?
I come from a large family so usually we are together on holidays. We slaughter, eat, drink and dance. Lots of dancing. This year I chose to work instead. I'm fresh from a two year sabbatical so I'm happy to work throughout the holidays.
3 words to summarize your vacations..
Phone-less. Serene. Laid-back.
What do you do on holiday season that you don't do the rest of the year?
I eat plenty of street food. On the road a lot from one relative to the other. I take naps around 2pm.
The ideal vacation for you would be...
The ideal I'm working towards right now is creating my life in a way that I never feel I've got to get away. Let the rest of the year be refreshingly pleasant. I haven’t figured out ‘how’ yet but that’s the goal. A feeling of ease throughout the year.
A youthful memory around vacations..
oh gosh I don’t even think the word ‘vacation’ exists in Zulu. What I remember growing up is celebrations. Some lasted longer than others. Other memories involve cousins visiting us for school holidays. Playing outside until dark. Getting into trouble for that and laughing about it.
A place you recommend to hangout in Johannesburg...
Monte Casino. It’s built to make you forget you’re in Joburg. I don’t know if that’s a good thing though for tourists. It’s refreshing if looking to try something different. I personally love the theatre in there.
Last words would be?
Oh. I’d be too busy munching chocolate to say anything wise :)
