My Vacation Stories - I’nubia

When someone’s soul is so pure it cuts through the plastic that is social media, you know you’ve met a true human being. That’s what happened when I met I’nubiya through Instagram. I was first inspired by her work in Gambia to help develop the community. The village she works with is Jouli / Joli located in Kiang West, The Gambia in West Africa. To be honest I was never ready to meet the person behind this meaningful work.

Here is how she modestly described what she does..

“I need the village to develop in a sustainable way, i.e. eco-friendly houses, improve the school building, expose the students to life outside of the village, economic development for our women and investment for the women's garden.”

Basically changing the world...

As I was impressed by the importance of what she does, she brought me back to the reality of making an impact...

“Thank you so much. There is much to be done for my village. It's not easy, but we are determined to make positive changes”

Just because it’s the best course to take, it doesn’t make it easy.

On this series called ‘My Vacation stories’ we ask you what you get up to when you are not working.

Where are you usually on holidays?

Hmmm... Very interesting.

However, I do not know if I have actually experienced 'holidays' in the literal sense of the word and meanings. While, I have my fair share of traveling, it is never a holiday / vacation type of situation where I lounge about and do 'nothing.' For example while pursuing Graduate studies in Turkey, I guess I did have holiday in Bodrum, but ended up visiting Ephesus for an historical tour.

3 words to summarize your vacations..

Calm. Mindful. Satisfying.

The ideal vacation for you would be...

I think I am yet to experience a 'real' holiday. Even, as an English teacher in France, I avoided the touristy / holiday activities. Since you asked, when I do have that holiday, it will be in The Comoros or Lesotho.

A place you recommend to hangout in Gambia...

In Gambia, definitely Gunjur there are numerous eco-lodge; such Footsteps and Nema Kuta. The area is very peaceful, lush and close to beaches that are less crowded. Also, Bintang Bolong eco-lodge, Makasutu, Tanje Museum and Kiang West, at least there the forest still remains intact and you can see the monkeys and some wildlife.

Last words would be?

Life is not for living only for self, I am in service to Yahweh first and my brothers and sisters second
